Description

CHRISTOW BENNAH SX 88 SW 5/86 Bennah Farmhouse GV II Farmhouse. C17 or earlier with late C19/early C20 addition. Whitewashed rendered stone rubble, late C19/early C20 addition in brick ; pantile roof, gabled at ends of main block, hipped at left end of wing ; projecting front lateral stack to main block, projecting right end stack, 2 stacks to rear left wing. Plan: Not entirely clear at time of survey (1987) as interior and roof not inspected but appears to be a C17 or earlier 3 room and through passage arrangement, lower end to the right, with a probably later rear wing at right angles to the hall giving a T plan. The wing has been remodelled and extended to the left in the late C19/early C20 and projects beyond the left end of the earlier block. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with a C20 gabled porch to the passage to right of centre. 2-light timber casements with glazing bars. The left return of the main block has a first floor blocked opening and a ground floor window: at the left end and set back from the main block is the late C19/early C20 wing, linked to the earlier block at an oblique angle. The rear elevation of the main block has one 3-light timber mullioned window to the first floor and a 2-light window below, the return of the wing has a 3-light casement with square leaded panes. Interior: Not inspected at time of survey (1987) but said to have ceiling beams, large fireplaces concealed by modern plaster and pegged roof trusses. A roof inspection might reveal medieval timbers and involve revising the dating suggested here. Group value with No 1, Bennah Cottage.
