Terraced house, now flats. Original build c1828 by JB Papworth, ruinous by 1969 and mostly rebuilt in facsimile in 1984. Bath stone, stucco, slate roof. Continues the line of Lansdown Crescent but not of the same style, finish or date as the single house No.2 or the rest of the Crescent and is not matched at the Crescent's other end. Ashlar ground floor with stucco scored in imitation of ashlar above and ashlar cornice; brick core and concealed roof; iron balcony. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, attic and basement. One window to Lansdown Crescent. Horizontal rustication to ground floor; first- and second-floor bands; frieze and cornice above second floor; crowning cornice. Ground floor window is tripartite sash. First floor is tripartite French casement with pedimented head and iron balcony. Second floor is 6/6 sash in architrave surround. Single flat-topped dormer above. Entrance front has central stone porch with Doric columns flanked by piers of plain square sections. 5-panel door with rectangular overlight. 3-window front: ground floor windows are 6/6 sashes. First floor are French casements with pedimented heads and iron balconies. Second floor are 6/6 sashes with architrave surrounds. 3 flat-topped dormers above. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: first-floor balcony has curved rods and circles to frieze. HISTORICAL NOTE: the present Lansdown Crescent was almost certainly designed by the Jearrads but the overall design derives from Papworth's 1825 'circular plot' of which only Nos 1 and 2 had been built by 1829-30 when Papworth ceased designing for Lansdown and Pearson Thompson sold his interest to the Jearrad brothers. Merrett's Map of 1834 shows 18 houses and building continued until 1850. Forms an important stop to Lansdown Crescent, although mostly rebuilt carefully in facsimile following partial demolition in 1980. Forms a group with Nos 2-12 (qv) and 13-47 (qv) Lansdown Crescent.
