ALVANLEY C.P. HELSBY ROAD SJ 47 SE North East Side 4/9 Clematis Cottage. 8/1/1970 GV II Cottage, partly early C17 and partly 1693 altered and extended, of painted coursed rubble sandstone; grey slate roof. 1 1/2 storeys, T-shaped, the cross-wing of 2 rooms, the later left wing of 1 room. The cross-wing is early C17 altered late C17. Cyma band at 1st floor. Front gable has cyma band at upper storey ceiling, 5-light recessed mullioned window to lower storey and 2 2-light mullioned windows (replacing a single window) to upper storey. 1 ridge chimney on each wing. Right side of cross-wing has 5-light recessed mullioned window to lower storey front room, replaced framed and boarded door surmounted by recessed datestone with shouldered round top, inscribed IE:I:1693. Late C20 glazed porch in front of inserted French window added to rear room. Rear gable has 3-light flush bevelled-mullion window to lower storey and 2 inserted mullioned windows to upper storey. Interior: A baffle-entrance plan, altered mid C20. Inglenook in front room has moulded front support of red sandstone inscribed KI:1620; large cambered oak bressumer. Late C17 sandstone fireplace in rear room with cyma overmantel; chamfered oak beam in front room. Stair replaced.
