TOLLESHUNT MAJOR BECKINGHAM STREET TL 91 SW (south side) 3/101 Gate Farmhouse - II

House. Mainly C17, with fragment of late medieval house, extended in C19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. One bay of a medieval hall house facing N, which formerly extended to the E, and C19 red brick extension to rear of it, with end stack. C18 3-bay house to E of medieval bay, stepped slightly forward from it, with central stack forming a lobby-entrance, the whole forming an L-plan. 2 storeys. 2-window range of mid-C19 sashes with marginal lights. Central flush 4-panel door. Right return of medieval bay faced with C19 red brick. The medieval bay is lower than the main block, and has a more steeply pitched roof, rebuilt in softwood. Jowled posts. At the junction between the 2 parts is a fragmentary crownpost truss, the plain crownpost heavily smoke-blackened on the left side, indicating that the present C17 building occupies the site of the medieval hall. In the main building, one chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops, the other boxed in. Large wood-burning hearths reduced for C20 grates. Clasped purlin roof, with re-used smoke-blackened rafters from the medieval hall.
