House. C17, refronted early C18. Coursed rubblestone. Old tile roof., 2 storeys and attic. 3 wide bays. Street front is early C18,has 7'windows. Central 6-panel door in architrave surround with plain outer surround, console brackets, cornice and pediment. 3-pane sashes in early C18 box-frames below segmented dressed stone heads with key blocks. The windows are grouped into rhythm 2:3:2:Splayed plinth, moulded first floor string, 3 2-light casemented hipped dormers. Flanking brick stacks on stone bases and stone coped gables on kneelers, 2 right hand bays have C17 stone mullioned cellar windows. On south-west gable is blocked C17 stone mullioned window with cornice head. Rear elevation has sashes, some blocked and on ground floor at left a reused front window with early C18 heavy glazing bars with chamfers. Patterned fanlight to back door. Interior: Early C18 staircase with square newels, heavy moulded handrail and very delicate turned balusters ending in a wide scroll at the foot. left hand room panelled and has pilasters flanking C18 fireplace. Panelled shutters and window seats. Right hand ground floor room has triglyph friezed cornice. 8-panel doors, The residence of William Cowper from 1786 to 1795 RCHM II 318 ON 3
