SLAPTON SLAPTON SX8244 Orchard Cottage (Nos. 1 12/97 2 and 3 Orchard Terrace)

House, once divided into 3 cottages. Circa early C17 or earlier, altered in C19. Stone rubble and possibly cob, plastered at front and partly slate hung at rear. Thatched roof, hipped at left hand end the right hand end has been raised and clad in asbestos slate. Stone rubble stack at left hand end with extended brick shaft, stone rubble rear lateral stack with tall tapered shaft with slate weathering; large rendered stack at right hand end incorporated into adjoining house. Plan: Probably originally a 3-room and through passage plan, the lower right hand (west) end heated from a gable end stack, the hall from a lateral stack at the rear and the inner room at the left end has an end stack. There is a circa C18 or early C19 single storey outshut at the rear of the high left end. In the C19 it was divided into 3 cottages one in each of the 3 rooms of the plan, the lower right hand end was remodelled and its eaves raised probably when the adjoining cottage No 4. (Spring Cottage) was built. In the C20 the cottages were reunited into one house and the ground floor of the lower right hand end was converted into a garage. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window range. The left and centre part under the thatch roof has C19 2 and 3-light casements with glazing bars and 2 C19 glazed panelled doors with C20 canopies. The lower right hand end has higher eaves, a C20 first floor casement and C20 garage door below. The left hand end has a small first floor window to left of stack in slate surround. Rear elevation, slate hung to left, large lateral stack at centre and stone rubble single storey outshut to right with rounded corner and slate lean-to roof. Interior: Inaccessible. The lateral stack of the hall has a large fireplace probably with a timber lintel. Other original carpentry is expected to survive and there might be an early roof structure.
