ORWELL TOWN GREEN ROAD TL 3650 (West side) 14/295 Orchard Cottage (No. 20) GV II Cottage of several building periods. c.1600, late C17 and C18. Timber-framed, plaster rendered and steeply pitched tiled roof. Axial ridge stack, rendered and end stack. Two bays and crosswing, with single bay, C17-C18 extension, at north east end. One storey and attic. Three dormers with horizontal sliding sashes. Fire insurance plaque to gable of north east dormer. Six ground floor windows, including two hung and two horizontal sliding sashes. Doorway now to crosswing. Interior: The bay at the south west end dates from c.1600. The framing visible in the rear wall and the curved downward bracing is of that period. The roof was raised and possibly a floor inserted into this bay in C19. The centre bay with inglenook hearth may also retain c.1600 wall frame but this is not visible. Otherwise the wall frame is of late C17-C18 and similar in structure to the two bay crosswing. This has slender downward bracing and staggered studwork. The roof over the crosswing is original and of clasped side purlin construction with the rafters halved and pegged at the apex and also with original ridge piece. The bay to the north east was added, C18.
