NORTH YORKSHIRE HAMBLETON 5337 SE 49 SW LEAKE A 19 (east side, off) 3/33 Church of St Mary 31.3.70

GV I Church C12, C13, C14 and C15. Coursed rubblestone and ashlar, Welsh slate and lead roofs. West tower, aisled nave with clerestory and south porch, chancel. Tower: C12. 3 stages, flanked by aisles. Later pointed-arched west window of 3-cusped lights with hood-mould under band; to each aisle a 2-light Y-tracery pointed-arch window. To second stage on south side a one- light arched window. Third stage has triple arcade to each side with cushion capitals to columns, blind outer arches and louvred 2-light belfry opening to central arches, corbel table. Plain chamfered parapet. Nave: 2 bays with 3-bay aisles. Porch is gabled with pointed-arched doorway under hood-mould; inner pointed-arched board door; stone coping and finial to gable. To right of porch is 2-light Y-tracery pointed arched window. Plain parapet, stone coping. Aisle east window pointed-arched with 3 cusped lights. C15 clerestory has two 2-cusped-light flat-arched windows. Chamfered plain parapet. North aisle: board door set in chamfered surround has 2-light arched cusped overlight to left, a 2-light cusped window; to far left, a large 2-light cusped window. Chancel: 3 bays, divided by offset buttresses with diagonal buttresses at east end. Board priest's door set in left buttress. Y-tracery, 2-light arched windows, plain parapet. East window C15, of 4 lights with rectilinear tracery and hood-mould. Interior: 3-bay north arcade, C13, has round piers with stiff leaf capitals carrying round arches with one roll and one chamfer each. 3-bay south arcade, C14, one capital with oak leaf motif. C13 piscina. In the south wall of the nave a C13 medallion with an animal. Font cover, C17, heavily-moulded with acorn finial. Benches are all Jacobean with small panels of decoration. 3 stalls in chancel, of 1519, have carved bench ends, poppy heads, small beasts standing on detached shafts, dated 'MD 19'. Communion rail includes tracery of the former rood screen. A good brass of c1530 to John Watson and wife.
