7/190 Sethnoe Farmhouse, front garden walls and adjoining outbuildings
II
Farmhouse, front garden walls and gate piers and adjoining outbuildings. C17 or earlier, largely rebuilt in the C18, extended in the C19, with farm buildings, and incorporating C17 and possibly earlier fragments. The house is dressed coursed granite and elvan and granite and elvan rubble with dressed granite quoins, cills, jambstones and lintels, painted at the rear. The outbuildings are granite and killas rubble with dressed quoins, jambstones and lintels. Fairly steep heavily grouted scantle slate roof with some C17 crested clay ridge tiles over the right hand part with half-hipped end. Large brick stacks over gable end left and towards right over cross wall; lateral brick chimney shaft over roughly middle of the front wall. Cast- iron ogee gutters. Double depth plan with shallow projecting integral outshut behind the left hand side heightened in the C19; farm buildings adjoin at right angles front of the right hand side and rear of the right hand end, the rear wing adjoining a long range of farm buildings running parallel to the rear of the house and extending to the right. The house is a C18 and C19 remodelling and probably mostly rebuilding of a probably C17 house; now with large living room left of the present through passage, a small room or vestibule, right of the entrance; parlour on the right; outbuilding far right, formerly part of the house (said to have large fireplace) and service rooms behind. There is evidence for a doorway right of the present doorway and a blocked doorway behind the right hand part. 2 storeys. Irregular overall 4-window north-east front. The front wall is of several periods: probably C18 dressed coarsed almost ashlar left of the doorway; coarsed dressed stone probably C17 to the outbuilding front, far right, and rubble, partly coarsed, between. Straight joint with irregular dressed granite quoins between the house and the outbuildings is probably C18. The doorway with 4-panel top-glazed door is left of middle of the house front; small window opening just right of the doorway is in the original C18 doorway position. Wide window openings left and over are C18, the first floor window is an C18 18-pane 2-light horizontal sliding sash and the later 3-light horizontal sash to the ground floor opening is over a heightened sill. 4-pane sash right of the doorway and circa early C19 16-pane hornless sash over (probably the date of the doorway alteration); 12-pane hornless sash right of the lateral chimney and glazed door in former window opening farther to the right; circa early C19 16-pane hornless sash over. The outbuilding front has wide first floor window opening with a fixed casement but the ground floor is concealed by a C19 piggery at right angles to the front. At the rear, over the blocked doorway, is a reused flat chamfered C17 lintel. Two 4- pane sashes otherwise C20 windows. There is a shuttered hatch to a cellar of basement in the projecting outshut. Interior not inspected. Low C19 garden wall adjoins the left hand side at right angles to the front: coursed, dressed granite with granite coping surmounted by wrought-iron railings with spear- head finials; gabled granite monolith gate piers and original wrought-iron gate with swagged top rail. The outbuildings are mostly C19 and incorporate some C17 dressed stone including fragments of mullioned windows. The part adjoining the right hand end of the house as a lean-to and continuing as a wing at the rear may be C18. This lean-to is a piggery with doorway facing away from the house; extended in a similar way in the C19 to the front. The buildings parallel to the rear of the house are built partly cut into the slope at the rear and the fronts face the same direction as the farmhouse. The roofs, where still covered in scantle slate, are hipped. The barn behind the right hand side of the house has stone steps within the courtyard and first floor loading doorway. The part projecting to the right. beyond the farmhouse has ground floor doorways, a first floor winnowing doorway with doorway in rear wall opposite linked to the bank by a stone ramp. Window right of the doorway and former window left later built against and pigeon holes under the eaves between. Adjoining the right hand side with front slightly set back is another bank barn with a lower roof line. Ground floor openings only to the front, doorways with windows between. Access to the loft by a rear doorway linked to the bank by a ramp rebuilt in the C20. On the far right is a single storey building with 3 openings to the front and later outshut at the rear. Corrugated asbestos roof. Linked to the front of the garden with garden wall adjoining at the rear left and piggery adjoining at rear right is a former cottage and former cartshed. The cottage (now with monopitch corrugated iron roof) is a 2 room plan with nearly central doorway to the front and a small window on either side. The openings are spanned by reused C17 chamfered granite fragments. There was formerly a stone in the churchyard wall to a member of the Coade family of Sethnoe. Sethnoe is one of the best farmhouses in the parish, hardly altered since the C19, retaining much C18 fabric, and sufficent of the C17 to indicate its former quality and importance.
