Description


LODDISWELL SX 74 NW 5/132 Nos 1 to 5 (consecu- tive) The Terrace II Terrace of 5 houses. Circa 1840 with later C19 additions. Stone rubble, rendered at front and slate hung at left (west) end. Slate roof with gabled ends, left end over No 1 has bitumen type of coating. Rendered spiral stacks, some with lowered yellow clay pots. Plan: 5 double depth plan houses of one build. Nos 1 and 2 are larger and have 2 principal rooms at the front, a central entrance passage and service rooms at the back, a kitchen to the right, scullery to left and staircase between. The smaller right hand houses (Nos 3, 4 and 5) have 1 principal at the front, entrance to left and right, and service rooms at back. No l's internal arrangement is said to have been altered. There are small outshuts at the rear and an outshut at the right hand end with 3 privies and a loft shown. Exterior: 2 storeys (Nos 1 and 2 on left have attics). 2:2:3 window south front with pilasters between the bays and stringcourse at first floor level C19 12-pane sashes, those on ground floor of Nos 3,4 and 5 have been replaced by plate glass windows with top lights but retain original openings. Nos 1 and 2 have round-headed doorways and verandas, only the left hand end of No l's verandah has original wooden latticework. The doorways of Nos 3, 4 and 5 have C20 doors. 2 small gabled dormers on left. At the right hand (east) end an outshut with sash window at the front and 3 round-arch doorways on side with C19 2-light casement above with glazing bars and lapped panes. Various C19 and C20 casements and outshuts at rear. Interior: No 2 retains most of the original joinery including panelled doors, cupboards and window shutters; reeded pilasters to round arch in hall and original chimneypieces in front rooms and also in kitchen; the kitchen fireplace has a C19 range; the staircase balustrade has been taken out. No 1 is said to have altered interior, Nos 3, 4 and 5 not inspected inside. Note: Reputedly buit by John and Mary Carne of Combe (qv) in this parish.
