DEERHURST DEERHURST VILLAGE SO 8629-8729 10/52 The Minstrels 4.7.60 (formerly listed as The Thatch, Whitehall) GV II Former farmhouse, now house. C15, possibly late C16 or early C17, later C17, altered early C19, mid C20. Timber framing with rendered panels on part brick, part stone plinth; shingle roof. Six-bay house, one room deep, 2 storeys. Entrance front: framing 4 panels high, slightly higher to right of front door: to left eaves slightly raised: end bay left added, with separate main posts against earlier ones. Ground floor windows mid C20: small pane. Large, 2-light casement on right; 4-panel door up one stone step, under open timber porch, single storey with gable. To left, 3-light casement, paired and single 2-light casements. Above, 3- light casement, iron opening light, 2-light horizontal-sliding sash, 5-light casement mounted on face of wall, older parts ovolo moulded: 2-light horizontal-sliding sash, 2-light casement. Chimney on ridge behind front door. Interior: wide stone fireplaces with timber lintels: evidence of change of stonework in side by front door: stairs behind chimney. Wide chamfer to ceiling beams, ogee stop, room to left of entrance, no stop room beyond. Roof, rafters renewed mid C20: truss to right of chimney angled struts. To left of chimney main timbers to 2 bays smoke blackened. Open truss principal rafter tenoned to inner face of wall post: cambered collar with arch bracing, 'V' struts over, inner face principals chamfered. Second truss upper part of cruck, with collar and stud, old purlin survives on front with curved wind braces, square ridge member originally. Cruck cut off below eaves level. Oldest part 2 bay cruck building to left of chimney, open to roof, with central hearth, later outer walls rebuilt, floor inserted and possibly gable chimney built. House changed to lobby entry by enlarging at right-hand end; at some stage further bay added to opposite end, or may have been separate replacement of one bay. Roof reported to be thatched before mid C20. Lean-to on left end not of special interest. Forms group with barn, Abbot's Court Farm (q.v.).
