Description

HILMARTON CALNE ROAD SU 07 SW (west side) 9/228 Hilmarton Manor II Country house, mid C19 shooting lodge progressively enlarged with large rear wing of c1910. Built for the Poynder family. Squared rubble stone with stone slate roof and prominent ashlar paired stacks. Two storeys, Tudor cottage style with leaded stone mullion windows, mullion-and-transom to ground floor. Original range is probably L-plan range to centre and left of east front with gabled porch in angle projecting forward of cross wing gable. Cross wing has ridge stack and west end stack, main range has pair of octagonal rear wall stacks. Cross wing has gable-end 3-light window over ashlar 1:3:1-light canted bay. Porch has ashlar gabled front with depressed arched entry and hoodmould with carved head stops. Main range, to left of porch has 2-light each floor, upper window breaking eaves under dormer gable. South end gable has ashlar canted bay with pierced parapet and upper window with hoodmould and carved animal head stops. To right of cross wing gable on east front, a matching one-window section with north stack, 2-light each floor, upper window under dormer gable, this section possibly an early addition. Attached at rear north west angle is service range, the east gable with ashlar bellcote and 4- centred arched windows with hoodmoulds, 2-light above moulded string, door and 3-light below. Door is set in 3-sided Tudor- arched open stone porch in angle to north wall of main house. A large south west rear wing was added c1910 with flat-roofed 2- storey block in angle and gabled cross wing at west end. House was formerly known as Hilmarton Lodge and was the principal house of the Poynder family Hilmarton estate, sold 1914 by 1st Lord Islinqton.
