WALLSEND STATION ROAD (east side) NZ 26 NE 6/169 Buddle Arts Centre and No. 258a. G.V. II Schools, now library store and arts centre. 1876 by J. Johnstone in competition for Wallsend Schools Board. Snecked sandstone with ashlar plinth, quoins and dressings; Welsh slate roof with decorative ridge tiles. E-plan with 3 rear wings. Scottish baronial style. One storey and attics in gables; 13 bays and pent end porches. Symmetrical. End and central bays gabled and projecting. Bays flanking are set back 3-bay flat sections. Replaced central door and overlight, window above. Sash windows with glazing bars, paired, in chamfered surrounds with bar stops; sloping cills. Windows in gables under drip strings with relieving arches over. Crow-stepped gables on moulded kneelers, the centre with clove finial; corbel table in intermediate sections. Date panel at first floor centre. Roof has square central bellcote with fishscale roof. Truncated ashlar chimneys; one at right remains to full height. Linking open- arched passage set back at left to former headmaster's house; open-arched porch set back at right. Brick extension to east not of interest.
