Description

EGTON OLD PARK LANE NZ 80 NW (south side) 3/34 Newbiggin Hall 6.10.69 GV II Manor house, now farmhouse. Probably late C17; C18, early C19 and C20 alteration. For the Salvin family. Squared sandstone with pantile roof. U-shaped on plan. 2-storey, 2-window front between 2-storey-and-attic, 1-window gabled crosswings. Nail-studded central front door, in quoined and chamfered opening. All main front windows are 8-pane sashes, and crosswing gable end windows are 12-pane sashes. Left crosswing return has sashes, 12-pane on ground floor and 16-pane on first floor. Right cross- wing return has 12-pane sash on ground floor and tripartite window with centre sash on first floor. All windows have stone silis and plain lintels. Coped gables and block kneelers. End stacks to main roof and ridge stack on left crosswing. Rear. Basement and 2 storeys, with irregular openings. 2-light, chamfered mullioned window at left of added terrace. Similar window said to survive behind terrace. Left return. Shallow-pointed basement doorway in chamfered, quoined opening at left end, and similar doorway, approached by steps, at right end. Interior. Open-string, dogleg staircase, with column-on-vase balusters, moulded, ramped-up handrail and shaped treadends. In rear left room, chimneypiece with fretted frieze and moulded shelf beneath shaped sunk-panelled overmantel. In rear right room, moulded cornice and raised-and-fielded panelling to shutters and window recesses. Chamfered joists throughout ground floor. On first floor, C17 moulded square panelling re-used.
