TL 3629 BUNTINGFORD HIGH STREET (east side)

7/12 No 22 (The Gate House) -

GV II

House. Early C18, street front cased in brick in C19. Timber frame on red brick sill, roughcast with weatherboarded apron and old red tile roof to front part, slated to rear part. Grey gault brick street facade. 2 narrow, 2-storeys adjacent blocks extending E from street and covered by 4 pitched roofs parallel with street. Probably originating as accommodation for the Grammar School formerly at No 20. Now entered from N but rear block has an C18 entrance door on S with a 5-panel raised and fielded door up to 4 swept stone steps, panelled pilaster and a flat hood. 3 projecting red brick chimneys on S side, with flush box sash windows and 6/6 panes in front block but 3-light mullioned and transomed window with leaded glazing in rear block. Formal 3-windows, 2 storeys and parapet C19 brick street front with recessed sash windows set in sunk panels defined by pilasters, plinth, floor-band, and eaves band. 4-panel door with fanlight in carriageway on N.
