Country house in landscaped park. Late C17, extensively remodelled in 1799 by J. Wyattville. Ashlar with rusticated pilaster quoins to cornice and attic parapet, hiding slate roof with lead cupola and various stacks. 2½ storeys with 2 storey wings. West Elevation:- Sashes without glazing bars in moulded architrave surrounds with bracketted cills, 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1. Central section of 7 bays with central bow of 3 windows divided by 2 storey high Tuscan half-columns supporting frieze, cornice and wrought iron balustrade to attic storey, 7 casements in attic. Outer wings have tripartite sashes on ground floor and pedimented first floor sashes, those on south wing being blocked. Central double entrance doors in simple architrave surround. South Elevation:- 2 storeys, chanelled pilasters at quoins and between let and 2nd windows from left; 4 plain sashes, that to left being tripartite with transom light on ground floor, French casements on ground floor. East Elevation:- Plain sashes in moulded surrounds with bracketted cills, 2 - 1 - 3 - 1 - 2; outer wings have tall tripartite sashes on ground floor with transom lights frieze and cornice on scroll brackets rising from mullions. Inner wings have tripartite sashes with frieze and cornice on ground floor. Central portion recessed with loggia of 2 Tuscan columns and 2 half columns supporting frieze cornice and stone balustrade. Parapet carried up in centre to support carved stone coat of arms. Interior: Staircase hall:- Imperial stair with scroll string to half open stair, cast iron balustrade with cross panel balustrade and candelabra baluster supporters. Arcaded recesses to first floor with bucrania frieze and cornice. Pendentives to dome with large drum and lantern. Scroll decoration to dome and drum. Large dock at head of first flight built into skirting board. Dining: Room:- Arched recess at serving end flanked by doors with Ionic scagliola columnar screen in front. Cornice with flower and wheatsheaf frieze. Marble fireplace. Library:- Marble fireplace, acanthus and egg and dart. Fitted wooden bookshelves with bracketted cornices. Drawing Room:- 1864 in a second Empire style with Louis XVI boiseries. Marble fireplace with paired pilasters supporting mantel shelf with pier glass over. Pier glasses on 2 other walls with neo-Louis seize tables. Doors, doubled, of inlaid recessed panels, overdoor reliefs of putti. V.C.H. Berkshire - Vol.iv. - page.165. B.O.E. Berkshire p.102.
