GREAT BEALINGS WOODBRIDGE ROAD TM 24 NW (North Side) 4/77 The Lodge 16/3/66 II House. Early and Mid C19. Stuccoed brick with a slate roof. Two storeys. Entrance front: the two bays at right of early-Cl9 date, the taller bay at left of later date. Both portions have, to their corners, quoins of banded rustication and the whole front is colourwashed. Before the right hand two bays is a lean-to verandah-porch of mid-late Cl9 date with a tiled floor and chamfered square wooden posts with wrought iron brackets. Within this is a classical doorway which has Doric 3/4-columns with entasis supporting a plain entablature. This surrounds a tripartite door arrangement with a door of 6 raised and fielded panels to either side of and above which are lights in a ribbed frame. To right of this are two tripartite French windows with central door of 2x4 panes and lateral lights of lx4 panes with slightly projecting ashlar surrounds which are lugged and grooved and have deep lintels as if designed to accommodate blind boxes. To the first floor above this are two tripartite windows with central sash windows of 2x3 panes and lateral lights of lx3 panes. These have projecting sills supported on brackets and painted ashlar surrounds which are lugged and grooved. The later bay at left is flush with the earlier portion. To the ground floor is a window of 4x4 panes with a grooved ashlar surround as at right, and a similar window to the first floor. The right hand range has a concave hipped roof and the left hand roof is hipped but without being curved. The left hand side (to the mid-C19 portion) has a ground-floor sash of 4x4 panes and the first floor sash is of 3x4 panes, both having grooved ashlar surrounds as before. To left of this and recessed is a projecting wing which has French windows at right and a sash window of 3x4 panes. The right hand side of the house has, at left, 2 bays, that at left being a tripartite window with central sash of 2x4 panes falling to ground level with lateral lights of lx4 panes. To right of this is a C20 lean-to outshut with a 1/2-glazed door and one 4-light casement window and one cross- window. To the first floor are two tripartite windows with grooved ashlar surrounds having central sash windows of 2x3 panes and lateral lights of lx3 panes. Concave hipped roof above this. Projecting at right of this is a later C19 gabled wing with a concave roof and to its left hand side are 2 bays which have French windows to ground floor left and at right a sash window of 3x4 panes with cambered head, both C20 insertions. To the first floor a similar sash window. The gable end has a ground floor window of 3x4 sash panes which is a C20 insertion and a first floor window of 3x4 panes. Ground floor outshut at right. The rear shows the house to have been added to at several periods with a variety of roofs and levels.

Interior: the drawing room (to the mid-C19 portion) has a cornice with rinceau ornament to the frieze and Greek curled foliage and heavy rosette to the centre of the ceiling with sunflower and leaves in relief. Chimneypiece of veined white marble and panelled shutters. The library has a ribbed cornice with panelled shutters in ribbed surrounds and a variegated marble chimney piece. Staircase of one flight with stick balusters, moulded mahogany handrail with wreathed curtail and inset ivory disk. Hob grates to the first floor rooms.
