Suburban house. Mid C19, extended and altered c1880-1900. Dressed, coursed golden freestone with granite-coped plinth, granite quoins, sills, chamfered jambs and lintels, strings and dressings to otherwise brick stacks; rubble to later wing; dry slate roofs with red crested clay tiles; 2 gable stacks. Irregular double-depth plan, extended on the left (east). 2 storeys plus attics; irregular elevations; overall 4-window range to north entrance front. This front has original 3-window-range block on the right with blind gable end on its right; central gabled porch has trefoil-arched doorway with squat engaged column jambs with volutes; stepped 2-light stair cross window with glazing bars and turned mullion shaft under carved transom linked to sill string of flanking round-headed windows with 2-light casements; 4-pane horned sash to ground floor left. Tall wall left of this range then C20 entrance and gable end of service wing with chamfered frames with stoolings for mullions and transoms and casements with glazing bars except sash to right-hand light of 1st-floor window; 2 narrow lights to ground floor. Garden front is overall 6-window range: original 3-window-range block on left with stoolings for mullions to windows with 4-pane hornless sashes; 2-storey canted bay window on the left with polygonal roof; central round-arched window and 2-light window (under gable) over 3-light window, on right. Bay set bay right of this has similarly detailed openings with 8-pane sash over 30-pane sash; gable end of service wing on right with close-spaced narrow lights to 1st floor and attic and C20 lean-to conservatory. West entrance front has shallow gable porch, otherwise similar detail with principal porch; pair of glazed doors with herringbone brick detail above. INTERIOR: where inspected is complete and includes moulded ceiling cornices, some with dentils; open-well open-string stair; some Gothic-style detail and chimneypieces with consoles in parlour. Gothic-style slate chimneypiece resited in later wing. History: said to have been built for a doctor, later the home of the Reverend Philpotts (later Bishop) and requisitioned during World War II.
