Description

HALSALL NEW STREET (west side) SD 31 SE 3/64 Halsall Hall 11-10-1968 II

House. Probably early C18, altered late C18, and mid C19 when converted into cottages. Brick with sandstone dressings. Roof covered only by felt and battens at time of survey (March 1987). Comprises a long range with stone plinth and storey band. Centre gabled and flanked by pilaster strips. On the ground floor it has 2 tall sashed windows cutting through the storey band, a worn stone plaque on the 1st floor, and a Venetian sash window to the attic. To the left are 4 bays which have rebated and chamfered 3-light mullioned windows on the ground floor and sashed windows with plain reveals on the 1st floor. To the right of the 1st and 3rd windows are chamfered doorways with Tudor arched heads. They appear to be C19. The left-hand one is blocked. To the right of the centre are 2 bays treated similarly. They have a Tudor-arched doorway between them. At the right are 2 sashed windows with flat brick arches, cutting through the storey band. The upper storey is blank except for a plaque inscribed '1882' above. Between these windows is a blocked Tudor-arched doorway. Chimneys to right of 2nd bay, to left of centre, and to left of 2nd window from right. Interior: said to contain some panelling.
