LONGDON C.P. - SK 01 SE 10/72 Longdon Old Hall 27.2.64 II

Farmhouse. Late C17/early C18 remodelling of an earlier house. Red brick on sandstone plinth replacing earlier timber framing; plain tile roofs with raised verges; brick lateral stacks. 2 parallel ranges aligned north-south facing north; the west range contains an entrance passage extneding the full length of the house and terminating in the staircase. 2 storeys and attic on cellar with corner and central pilaster strips. 4 window front beneath 2 gables; casements with segmental heads. Boarded door to right of centre with bronze lion head door knocker. West front. 2 pilaster strips flank a boarded door with segmental pointed head, dentilled eaves band. Interior. The north door gives access to the entrance passage which has a C17 dog-leg stair case at its south end with closed string and splat balusters. The north room of the east range has C17 oak wall panelling and intersecting cross and spine beams. The east wall of the entrance passage contains a long curved tension brace visible only from the cellar, and at ceiling height a moulded beam, possibly re-used. Chamfered and stopped cross beam and very wide joists over the south room (kitchen) of the east wing. Cellar walls built of massive sandstone blocks. In one of the first floor rooms of the east wing is a cross beam with double ogee moulding, possibly re-used. Roof trusses with raking struts.
