Dental hospital, now university department building. 1908, by Charles Heathcote. Red brick with liberal dressings of limestone; slate and glass roof. Roughly rectangular plan on corner site, at right-angles to street. Edwardian Baroque style. Three storeys and attic, 3 bays (2:1:2 windows), symmetrical, the centre breaking forwards slightly; with stone quoins, prominent modillioned cornice, parapet, and hipped roof. The centre bay has full-height stone pilasters and an open-segmental pediment with a cartouche; a semi-circular porch at ground floor with Ionic columns, entablature with cornice, and half-domed roof; a large window at 1st floor (like the others at this level, see below) and a stone balcony with wrought-iron railings and a round-headed window at 2nd floor. The outer bays have 2 windows to each floor, those at ground floor segmental-headed 12 -pane sashes with keystones, those at 1st floor 3-leaf 18-pane sashes in moulded architraves with triple keystones; and oeil-de-boeuf windows at 2nd floor with triple keystones and swags. Wrought-iron forecourt railings to left and right, with simplified Art Nouveau standards. Close to the front corner of the right-hand return side is a full-height semi-circular bay which has stone bands to ground and 1st floors, stone top floor with swags, cornice carried round and balustraded parapet. Long range to rear of this mostly in functional style, with sky-light roof. Interior not inspected. Forms group with Manchester Museum (q.v.) and University of Manchester (q.v.) to left.
