House, now attached pair. Mid-late C17, No.40 separated early C19. Limestone rubble and dressings, formerly limewashed, with ashlar and brick gable stacks and stone slate roof. PLAN: 3-room plan with gabled rear range. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, cellar and attic; 1:2-window range. No.42 has sprocketed, bracketed eaves and a stone gable stack, timber lintels to a blocked right of centre doorway, former window to the left with a half-glazed door; first-floor label moulds, to 2-light C19 casements; lower 1-window wing behind the right-hand return, with a rear range parallel to the front. No.40 has a recessed left-hand door, and timber lintels to horned 2/2-pane sashes. Exposed ends of 3 ceiling and tie beams. The right-hand gable has a low hatch to the cellar, and the rear range has a ground-floor casement and first-floor late C19 3-light sash. INTERIOR: details of No.42 include a cellar cut into bedrock with a well containing a side passage; altered stair including a late C18 column baluster, early C19 first-floor stone fire surround with corner roundels and flanking cupboards with HL hinges, and a winder stair up to the attic with cambered tenoned collar trusses with butt purlins. No.40 not inspected.
