II
House. c1840. Embodying elements of an earlier building, and with extensions and interior remodelling of the 1890s. Architect of extensions (and perhaps of the remodelling), William Larner Sugden, 1896. Well coursed and squared rubble with slate roofs, and some brick in rear wing. EXTERIOR: 2-storeyed 3-window range to main block, with 3-storeyed rear wing (possibly embodying elements of an earlier building), itself extended by a further wing built into the earth bank, and with an Italianate tower over the junction with the main part of the house. Right-angled rear range added in 1896, also 3-storeyed. Central doorway in Tuscan portico porch, flanked by canted bay windows (possibly added c1860-70). 16-pane sash windows above. Plain overhanging eaves. INTERIOR: largely as remodelled in the later C19: the staircase and several fireplaces (one incorporating tiles by William de Morgan), and a stained glass window on the stairs apparently date from this time.
