2. C16. Timber-framed. C18 painted brick frontage on south (Tarrant Street) side. Late C19 brick frontage on east (High Street) side. West (rear) elevation partly tile-hung. Hipped and gabled tile roof. Red and grey brick chimney with louvre instead of pots. 2 storeys and attics. South elevation has brick modillion eaves cornice and 2 windows on each floor. 1 on ground floor has tripartite wooden frame, centre light with vertical iron bars set diagonally, flanking ligts with lead glazing bars. 1 attic dormer, gabled with 3 plain lights and brick nogging in the gable end. East elevation has, on ground floor, 3 bay windows with glazing bars, and moulded brick decorative panels set into their plinths; 1 modern plate glass door, 1 double hung sash window win glazing bars and a gauged brick apron with ogival lower edge, and 6-panelled door in plain surround, the 2 latter grouped together under a moulded brick cornice. 3 double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on 1st floor. West elevation has 1 largely demolished wing, and 5 double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. Interior: on ground floor, 1 room with a mid or late Cl6 plaster ceiling. Slender curving ribs, which intersect to form apple-shaped motifs, enclosing oak trees (with acorns) in low relief. Smaller intervening spaces filled with 2 different types of rosette, 7 larger ones filled with Tudor roses surrounded by laurel wreaths and 2 of the larger ones filled with lions rampant. Mid or late C16 panelling, mostly concealed by hardboard. The small amount which is exposed appears to be later than the ceiling, since line of ceiling cornice cuts through middle of each panel. Identical to panelling in upper room (see below); but includes 2 fluted and stopped pilasters, with incised lines between each flute. Upper room had plaster ceiling which has now collapsed (traces of plaster and of lathes on ceiling joists), it may possibly have overlapped the panelling, and thus have been younger. Mid or late C16 panelling. Oak, painted grey. Small panels of regular size throughout, approximately 1 ft high and 9 ins broad. Stiles moulded on the solid, identical throughout. Muntins interrupted by the rails. Mouldings mitred on underside of rails only, and not on upperside. Rails are in every case not moulded on the upperside, but have plain chamfer. Pilasters flanking chimney piece have been removed, but their plinths remain, these are approximately 1 ft 6 ins high with recessed panels (without fielding, strapwork or any other decoration); profiles of pilasters (unpainted) show them to have been approximately 7 ft high, dispropor- tionately narrow, with an entasis, slightly too wide "Tuscan" capitals, and wide bases. Fluted frieze motif above door and chimney piece. Panelling is not completely regular, and appears to have been fitted as best possible around the 2 double-hung sash windows. Mid C19 cast-iron rococo fireplace. Another small upper room has early C18 fielded panelling up to dado level, and doorcase with moulded surround and segmental fanlight. Staircase is early C18, with a plain rail and turned balusters.
