House. C19 incorporating C17 walling and Cl6 masonry fragments. Coursed squared limestone and gritstone with brick to left; C17 red brick, Flemish bond, with ashlar quoins to right. Pantiles. 2 parallel gabled 2-storey ranges: the range to left of 2 bays with recessed entrance bay to left; the range to right of 2 bays. Left range: C20 small-paned side-sliding sash to ground floor right; similar vertical sash to first floor left, C19 sash to right. Between the first-floor windows there is a stone plaque with a shield in relief, below it there are the remains of an inscription in Gothic lettering "..? deo" and another shield. C20 brickwork to gable with irregularly pitched sides and stack. Range to right: C20 sashes with glazing bars in C19 openings with stone sills and lintels to both floors. Rear and left return: rendered, with C20 brickwork and openings; right return: the walling with inserted brick panels in position of ground- and first-floor fireplaces (left) and a first-floor fireplace, right; side wall stacks of reused stone. Interior not inspected at resurvey but reported to, contain moulded ceiling beams. The Gothic lettering is similar in character to the early C16 work of Abbot Huby at Fountains and several other sites (Brimham Hall, How Hill Tower), his motto being 'Sol Deo Honor et Gloria'. The Roundell family owned land in Knaresborough and Scriven in the medieval period. Their arms (or, a fess gules between 3 olive brances vert) may be those on the weathered stone. Speight refers to the house in the early C20 as 'reputed to have been the homestead of the Slingsbys of Scriven Hall; there was then a coat of arms over the main entrance and 'a great portion pulled down'.
