Monumental Market Cross. 1861. Probably by T.C. Hine. In memory of John Hassall. Gothic revival style. Sandstone ashlar with octagonal Westmorland slate roof. Octagonal plan. 8 bay arcade with round piers, moulded capitals and bases and moulded pointed arches. Spandrels contain quatrefoils with monograms. Ballflower ornament. Moulded eaves with leaf carving and incised text. "This Market Cross has been re-built in affectionate remembrance of John Hassall of Shelford by his Friends and Neighbours. An.Dmi MDCCCLXI. To be beloved is better than All Bargains." Octagonal lantern has quatrefoil windows, lead roof with 4 gabled and crested lucarnes, and elaborate finial cross.
