Pair of large terraced houses with attached verandah, forming part of row of 15 in interestingly varied but harmonious style. Mid to later C19; altered. White-painted stucco, slate roofs, stuccoed chimneys; cast-iron verandah. Italianate style. Double-depth plan, No.8 single-fronted and No.9 double-fronted, with back extensions. EXTERIOR: two-and-a-half storeys, 1:2+2 windows, a strongly articulated 3-bay composition in which the centre and left bays successively break forwards and the right and left have open-pedimental gables; with a 1st-floor string course and bracketed eaves and gables. Square-headed doorways, to the right at No.8 and in the centre at No.9, both with pilasters and overlights but that at No.9 wider with side windows. The gabled left portion of each has a large pilastered canted bay window, above which No.8 has a tripartite window with raised architrave including central pediment on consoles and No.9 has canted upper stage with prominent cornice; and at attic level a segmental-headed window with keyed shouldered architrave. Right of the doorway No.9 has a tripartite window; above, No.8 has a window with shaped and shouldered architrave and No.9 has 2 windows with dentilled cornices on consoles, that to the right with divided half-glazed doors to the balcony; and a pair of segmental-pedimented dormers. Tall corniced multiple-flue chimneys to the left of each. Carried round the whole is an attractive cast-iron verandah with geometric open-work standards with slender foliated brackets to a pierced frieze, the portion to the centre bay carrying a balcony with very delicate wrought-iron railings and the rest glazed. INTERIORS: not inspected. Adjoins Nos 3-7 (consec) to the right (qv) and No.10 to the left (qv). All the listed buildings in Beach Lawn, together with those in Adelaide Terrace, Bath Street, Marine Crescent and Marine Terrace, form a group in the Waterloo Conservation Area of Crosby.
