House, now hostel. c1840. Possibly by GT Andrews. Mottled brick, in Flemish bond at front, English garden wall bond at rear; painted stone porch. Timber eaves band and cornice to shallow-pitched slate roof with brick end stacks. Central entrance hall plan. EXTERIOR: basement and 3 storeys; 3 bays; attic to gabled centre bay, which breaks forward slightly. Porch of antae with moulded imposts and entablature with bold cornice, lit by tall round-headed windows with upper lights of frosted glass. Panelled double doors beneath margin-glazed overlight, in panelled reveal. All first and second floor windows are 12-pane sashes with painted stone sills and flat arches of brick, except for C20 replacement in centre of second floor. Small unequal 9-pane attic sash in centre bay, with cambered head and arch and painted stone sill. Eaves band with bracketed modillion cornice, returned at each end. Rear: basement, 3 storeys and attic; 3 bays, with 2-storey canted bay at right end. Panelled and margin-glazed door in centre, approached by flight of steps with stick balusters and shaped handrail. Single unequal 15-pane sash on ground floor of canted bay; 12-pane sashes elsewhere. INTERIOR: ground floor: cantilevered staircase rises from ground to second floor around oval well. It has shaped treadends and turned bobbin balusters with serpentine moulded handrail, wreathed at foot around turned newel on shaped curtail step. Entrance hall: front doorcase reeded with angle roundels. Internal doorcases reeded with angle rosettes; panelled doors; moulded cornice and ceiling rose. Front room to right: panelled window shutters and moulded cornice. Rear room to left: reeded doorcase with angle rosettes. Garden window in reeded architrave with angle roundels and panelled reveals with shutters; other window architraves similar without shutters. Plain marble fireplace with pilaster jambs, moulded imposts and mantelshelf. First floor: landing doorcases reeded with angle rosettes, some retaining original 6-panel doors; moulded cornice. Room to left (partitioned): marble fireplace with pilasters, moulded imposts and moulded cornice shelf on consoles carved with vine and grape ornament; reeded window surrounds with plain paterae, panelled beneath window; moulded cornice and ceiling rose. Front room to right: plain fireplace; moulded cornice. Rear room to right: reeded doorcase with angle roundels; moulded cornice and ceiling rose. Second floor: in all main rooms, plain fireplaces and moulded

cornices survive. Attic: plain fireplace in each main room. Roof underdrawn but parts of two queen post trusses are visible.
