Description

SS 90 NW CADELEIGH 5/55 Lower Ball - II House. C17, some C18 refurbishment, circa late C19/early C20 alterations comprising some rebuilding and an extension at the right end. Cob on stone rubble footings, whitewashed and rendered to the front elevation, the front left corner rebuilt in local volcanic rubble ; thatched roof with plain ridge gabled at ends ; end stacks, axial stack to right of centre, projecting front lateral stack with set offs, a tall rendered shaft and a semi-circular bread oven. The C17 plan appears to have been 3 rooms and a through passage, the lower end to the right ; the hall/kitchen heated by the front lateral stack with a semi-circular rear stair turret ; the narrow inner room to the left probably originally unheated. In the circa late C19/early C20 the building was divided into 3 cottages : a 1 room plan addition at the right end probably dates from this phase and may be co-eval with the rebuilding of the front left corner in stone and the provision of a second door on the front at the left. A straight stair has been inserted in the former passage and a single-storey brick rear lean-to with a corrugated asbestos roof probably also dates from the early C20. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with the front door to the former passage to the right of the lateral stack. The left hand of the front elevation is stone rubble with brick dressings and a doorway with an internal lobby has been added giving access to the left hand (inner) room. 2 light timber casements, either 6 or 2 panes per light. On the rear elevation the thatch is carried down as a catslide over the rear stair turret. Interior C17 features, in all 3 of the left hand rooms. The hall/kitchen has an unusual plank and muntin screen to the inner room with moulded muntins stopped off at hall bench level and a moulded head beam, a chamfered cross beam with step hollow stops and an open fireplace with stone rubble jambs, a chamfered timber lintel, brick-lined bread oven and a small square window in the chimney breast. 2 C18 2- panel doors have been inserted into the screen, similar doors to stair turret and on first floor timber newel stair in turret. The lower end and inner room both have chamfered stopped cross beams. Roofspace not inspected but may be of interest.
