LUGHORSE LANE TQ 75 SW HUNTON (North Side) 2/84 Gennings 5.12.1984 GV II

House. Built between 1727 and 1745 (Hasted), possibly incorporating part of a late C16 or C17 house. Internal fittings of 1760's. Late C19 and early C20 alterations. Chequered red and grey brick. C19 parapet, gables and breaks red brick in Flemish bond. C19 ashlar dressings to windows and doors. Plain tile roof. Double depth. West facing. 2 storeys, attics and cellar on chamfered brick plinth. Fragment of chamfered stone string course to right (south-west) corner. C19 central break. Plain C19 stone-coped parapet. Shaped stone-coped C19 gables; 3 to front elevation, 2 to right (south) return elevation and 3 to rear, all with moulded stone kneelers and urn finials. Roof hipped to left. Brick stack to left gable end and ridge stacks flanking central break. Irregular fenestration of 6 late C19 leaded stone mullion windows; one cross window to right, one to left, 3, closely- spaced, to central break and one small transomed window to left of break. 2 rectangular C19 and early C20 ground-floor brick bays with stone mullioned and transomed windows and plain parapets. Stone window to right return elevation. Ribbed double doors in central early C20 brick porch with stone dressings. Flight of 5 stone steps up to narrow balustraded terrace surrounding porch. Rainwater heads dated 1801. Conservatory to rear left (north-west) corner, in red brick, with moulded brick pilasters, and raised brick panels to parapet. Interior: entrance hall with fielded panelling, moulded cornice with Ionic modillions, and fluted pilasters flanking central stair-well. Modillioned cornice to stair-well, continued outside present well. Stairs with turned balusters and latticed cheeks. South-west room (to right of entrance hall) with C18 fireplace. South-east ground-floor room with sunk panelling and fireplace with Ionic columns and enriched frieze with central relief. Fielded panelling to east-central room. South-east and south-west first-floor rooms with moulded cornices and fretwork detailing. Plain sunk panelling to former room, shouldered fireplace to latter. Various C19 iron grates. C19 cast-iron skylight or vent with counter balanced opening dome, to ground-floor room to north of stairs. Stone from parapet with names of craftsmen, dated 1760. Painting of 1776 depicts 2-storey bow windows to south and west. Documentation includes bill of 1763 for panelling, Ionic modillions and fretwork and of 1767 for fireplace. Thought to be the setting for "Pride and Prejudice". (Mr. Mattingley, unpublished work on Gennings).
