Description

SKIRCOAT GREEN SE 02 SE 679-/7/10035 Bernerside House II Small country house. 1872. Built for Edward Crossley. Coursed stone with ashlar dressings. Slate roofs with moulded ashlar stacks and raised coped gables and finials. Plinth, cill and impost bands, moulded eaves and pierced parapet. Plain sashes throughout. South garden front, has central pair of French doors in a moulded ashlar surround, with above a single sash, to the left a 2 storey shallow bow window with 3 lights, and a small 2-light window in the gable. To the left a projecting wing with a 3-light square bay window, and above a 2-light window, in the gable a tiny 2-light window. West front has a canted bay window on the ground floor and 2 sash windows above with a datestone between. Beyond a projecting gabled wing with an attached former conservatory, this conservatory re-modelled c1960. Beyond a small 2 storey observatory with a round headed doorway with side lights in a moulded surround, and a hood above which forms a balcony to the window above. Entrance front has projecting porch with Ionic columns and a round headed doorway with double panel doors, above a single sash. To left a tripartite sash, and above a double sash with a tiny sash in the gable. Set back wing to left has a 2-light bay window with 2 sashes above. Interior. The hall and stairs, and the main reception rooms all retain their original plaster work and marble fireplaces. The staircase hall has plaster pilasters, an elaborate stair and a large 2 panel stained glass window. The doors and doorcases survive throughout.
