KINGSTON ON SOAR GOTHAM ROAD SK 52 NW (east side) 4/31 Kingston Hall G.V. II Large country house now divided into several houses. 1842-6 by Edward Blore for Edward Strutt, later created Lord Belper. Altered c.1977. Rock-face ashlar with ashlar dressings. Slate roof. Several irregularly dispersed stacks each with 2 or more tall shafts. Ashlar coped gables with kneelers. Decorative finials to kneelers and ridge. Moulded plinth band. Garden front with ground and first floor sill bands broken by the doorways. Ashlar quoins. 2 storeys plus attic, 5 bays. The single outer bays slightly project and are gabled. The remaining bays are topped with small gables, that of the central single bay being slightly wider. Corbel table to eaves where not gabled with open parapet over. Central basket arched doorway with part glazed door and marginal lights. Large 3 light ashlar mullion overlight with Tudor style hood mould and label stops. Either side are single doorways with glazed doors and overlights, further similar large 2 light overlights and hood moulds. The outer single bays each with single 2 storey canted bay with single 3 light ashlar transom and mullion casements to the front and single similar single light casements to each side. Above are single similar smaller windows in the canted bays. The single central bay has a single 3 light ashlar transom and mullion casement with Tudor style hood mould and label stops. Either side are single tall narrow fixed lights, to right and left are single similar 2 light windows and hood moulds. Above, single central bay with oriel window, single sash to each side. Either side are 2 ashlar mullion sashes with Tudor style hood moulds and label stops. Each gable apex has a single small blind rectangular panel. To the right, set back is a tower of 4 stages with conical roof, corbel table and bands, the top stage is slightly recessed. Attached to the rear left and set back is a single storey 4 bay wing with open parapet and finials. 4 two light cross casements alternate with 5 buttresses. Attached to the left is a tower with conical lead roof and finial. Of 2 stages, the top stage slightly recessed. Arched doorway with Tudor style hood mould and label stops rising over a blind panel. Above are 2 blind slit ventilators. Attached to the left is the 7 bay conservatory now swimming pool. Central Tudor arched doorway with decorative spandrels and Tudor style hood mould and label stops rising over a decorative panel. Either side are single pilaster strips with 3 cross casements further left and right. Rear of house has a large closed porch with single octagonal mock turrets at each angle, each topped with ashlar dome and finial. 4 centred arched doorway with decorative spandrels, ashlar mullion overlight and hood mould. Extending from the left of this front is the single storey plus attic, 7 bay service wing, the left single bay slightly projects and is 3 storeys with conical roof. Extending from the rear of this range is a further L shaped range forming a small courtyard. Interior. Entrance hall has alabaster columns from the estate. The moulded arches over with decorative key blocks and spandrels. Alabaster doorway topped with pediment supported on decorative brackets Ceilings of major rooms with Elizabethan style plaster decoration. Open well staircase with decorated newels and Elizabethan style strapwork balusters. Some contemporary fireplaces, one ashlar and decorated with roundels and lozenges. Library and dining room said to be panelled.
