Description

THORNTON DALE HIGH STREET SE 8383 (south side) 14/118 Comber House GV II Rectory, now two dwellings. 1839-41; subdivided 1985. By J P Pritchett for Rev John Richard Hill. Hammer-dressed sandstone on low plinth, with ashlar dressings; slate roof. Street front: 2-storey, 3-window front to left, with lower 2-storey, 3-window service wing, slightly set back to right. 8-panel door in architrave and cornice to centre of left range, flanked by 12-pane sashes with recessed panels beneath them. Three 12-pane sashes to first floor. Flat arches of voussoirs to all windows. Central 6-panel door in plain architrave to service wing with small, newly inserted lattice window to left. 12-pane sashes with stone sills to left and right and 3 similar smaller, windows to first floor. Flat arches to all windows. Rear: full height canted bay to centre of higher end. Paired modillions to eaves throughout. Hipped roof to left with ridge stacks; centre ridge stack to service wing, and end stack piercing roof hipped to right. Interior: open string straight staircase with cast-iron balustrade, turned newel and moulded and wreathed handrail. End room to left has a built-in glazed cupboard with dentilled cornice and moulding glazing bars repeating the elongated hexagonal form of the staircase balustrade. Unoccupied at time of resurvey.
