House. 1935 by H. Munro Cautley for himself. Rendered and whitewashed brick and timber frame. Plaintile roofs. Plan is of an east-west range with gabled projections to north and south extending from east end. Elizabethan vernacular style. All windows are casements with leaded glazing. 2 storeys and attic. South elevation has at the east end a gabled projection lit through a canted bay window on ground floor, with a pierced parapet. Above is a 3-light casement with smaller single-light upper side windows. Gable-head with vertical timber studs and a pierced bargeboard. East return with stepped external stack. Stepped back to west is a square projection under a hipped roof, completely timber-framed and lit through a 4-light casement to ground floor and a 3-light first-floor casement. Main wall of house further west has the roof swept down over a recessed porch, with a 3-light and a 2-light casement lighting the sitting room and a moulded door to the right, leading to staircase hall. One 3-light casement to west in main wall, under a 4-light frieze of casements. Wide gabled roof with a hipped dormer fitted with a 3-light casement. West gable end has a 2-storey timber-framed canted bay with vine-trails on the principal studs and bressumers. Jettied attic bressumer and a 2-light attic window in gable-head. North front with a timbered gabled projection lit through a 3-light casement with upper side casements to each floor. Behind is a stepped stack. External stepped stack at west end, linked to the projecting gable by a ground-floor lean-to. 2 and 3-light casements. East of the projecting gable is a passage link into a garage and maisonette block standing east of main house. It has a dominant gabled roof fitted with a large gabled dormer with a 3-light casement. This disposition repeated to north front of garage block, where there are timber garage doors to ground floor. The 4-light dormer casement here is enriched by a strapwork pargetting over the window lintel. Interior: Dining room (in south projection): plaster cornice with acanthus decoration below ceiling frieze of painted plasterwork showing naturalistic fruit and flowers. Panelled door boarded on outside. Plain timber fireplace surround. Staircase has a closed string decorated with billet mouldings and stylised interlaced leaf-trails. Raking dado beneath panelled with linenfold. Thick moulded splat balusters, moulded handrail and square newels with bobbin finials. Sitting room (west end): 8-panelled door, boarded on outside, leads to anteroom with small-framed panelling and a geometric plaster ceiling; main room has roll-moulded bridging beams and wall-plates decorated with billet and punched motifs. 4-centred stone fireplace has leaf-trails and dragons carved into spandrels and a crenellated mantel. Timber overmantel is recessed and panelled.
