TQ 2980 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER ST. JAMES'S SQUARE SW1 81/98 24.2.58 No 13 GV II* Terraced town house. c. 1735-37,probably by Matthew Brettingham senior for Henry Lidell, Lord Ravensworth. Brick stained black and mock-pointed as headers, slate roof. 3 storeys and basement. 4 windows wide. Ground floor with later stone facing coursed and chamfered,with voussoirs and keystone to semicircular arched door- way, in 2nd bay from left, and to flat arches of recessed sash windows. Upper floors have recessed sashes in stone architraves, tall on the piano nobile with cornices. 1st floor plat band and sill band; bracketed main stone cornice and blocking with C19 central chimney stack flanked by consoles and with segmental pediment cap. Early C19 bowed cast iron balconies to 1st floor. Cast iron area railings and lampholders. Interior contains a number of original features, including 2 fine Kentian chimneypieces on ground floor; fine stone staircase in compartment through hall to rear, with stone strips and wrought iron balustrade, ramped handrail; chimney piece apse to ground floor of compartment, frieze cornices and pendentives to saucer dome over all in late Georgian plasterwork. Principal front drawing room on 1st floor has Kentian motifs to ceiling but with late C18/early C19 redecoration, rear west room retains Kentian chimney piece etc. Survey of London; vol XXIX
