Description

NORTH ELMSALL HALL LANE SE41SE (north side) 9/46 The Old Hall GV II Part of former manor house; now store. Probably early C17 or earlier, in 2 builds; altered. Magnesian limestone rubble with quoins, roofs of pantiles (patched with slate), and stone slate. L-plan formed by 3-unit main range on north-south axis and facing west (south gable to road), with 3-unit wing attached to rear of south end. All 2 storeys, but rear wing lower. The west front of the main range has a continuous dripmould (interrupted by inserted waggon doorways), and,a blocked doorway with cambered lintel in the centre, but is otherwise altered at ground floor; at 1st floor the centre and right- hand bays have king-mullioned double-chamfered windows of 2 + 2 lights, and the 1st bay has remains of a similar window; pantiled roof with ridged coping to south gable. The south gable wall has a reduced window at 1st floor and a blocked 4-light attic window, both with hoodmoulds. The south side of the rear wing has 2 transomed 4-light windows at 1st floor (in centre and near right-hand end), and a small 2-light double-chamfered mullioned window below the second of these, and various altered openings including an inserted doorway at 1st floor approached by external steps. The east gable has a transomed 4-light window at 1st floor. The rear (north side) of this wing has 5 chamfered doorways with cambered lintels; 1st and 4th altered as windows, the 2nd with replaced lintel; and a similar doorway in the centre of the upper floor. The rear (east side) of the main range has, inter alia, a wide doorway of similar design, and a projection which may have been an external chimney. The present north end of the main range (which formerly continued in this direction) has a large C 17 segmental-arched chamfered fireplace and a cambered doorway to its left, all within an exceptionally large segmental arch with chamfered surround, which appears to be a medieval fireplace; and above the centre of this, a small rectangular chamber fireplace. Interior: altered, but contains large chamfered beams of high quality.
