PIDDINGHOE TQ 40 sw 17/609 Large Barn at Hoddern Farm about 10 metres to south east of farmhouse GV II

Barn. Early Cl8 barn of 8 bays extended by 6 bays in early C19, the whole forming reputedly the second longest barn in East Sussex. Timber framed building of oak, the exterior clad in flint with red brick dressings and 1 row of ventilation slits. Half-hipped plain tiled roof. 3 cart entrances with double doors. Interior is aisled to the north-side. Eastern 8 bays have roof with angled queen struts, staggered purlins and no ridgepiece, the western 6 bays have a queen post roof with through purlins and ridgepiece and the timbers are held together by iron ties. All aisle posts are on padstones. The end 2 bays to the west of the early C18 part have 2 curious aisle posts which are flat at the rear and curved to the front with carved capitals and grooving. These may be reused parts from a ship or a mill fire shaft as the shape is quite unknown either in towns or domestic architecture. Angular jowled posts to cart entrances.
