House. Circa 1600. Compact rectangular farmhouse of 2 storeys, attics and cellar, with symmetrical front facing E. Manor house of manor of Chamberlains alias Bursteads (VCH III (1912) 342: ground plan and drawing of front, ibid). Timber frame on brick base, walls plastered, upper part of gables weather boarded. Steep old red tile roof, half-hipped at ends. Massive central chimney, with 4 joined diagonal shafts above rectangular base, rises through front slope of roof. Interesting symmetrical plan foreshadowing the double pile plan. Depths of house unequally divided into 2 deeper front rooms and 2 shallower service rooms at rear. Spacious well stair at rear of chimneystack reached from front entrance lobby by tunnel through stack. Ceiling beams across front rooms out of line with separate beams across rear rooms. Large rectangular rear kitchen wing at NW timberframed and plastered above brick base. Large internal gable chimney with pitched tile roofed brick oven projecting to W. Roof raised in early C19 now slated. C19 brick single storey breakfast room added in angle with rear wing. Symmetrical 2 window E front with 2 gabled dormers in roof-slope with 2-light Yorkshire sliding casements. 2 3-light mullioned and transomed wooden casement windows, and 2 small hipped roof C19 bay windows with similar windows and sidelights. Central door with heavy frame. The butt purlin roof is visible in the attics. 3 fine heavy vertically moulded plank doors with iron furniture, 2 in stair lobby on Ground floor and 1 on attic landing. Ovolo moulded 2-panelled early C18 doors on 1st floor. Ceiling beams axial on 1st floor. The house is a newly built timber structure of c.1600, and not an adaptation of an older hall house as the measurements of the plan might suggest.
