Description

LEGGE LANE 1. 5104 Hockley El No 17 (Gwenda Works) SF 0587 SE 27/10 II 2. Dated 1913, a jewellery works built for Sir Henry Manton, architect probably William Doubleday. The 4 storey works proper face a side lane off the corner of Legge Lane and are of red brick, with faience dressings, to the bands of windows which have moulded surrounds with rounded corners apart from plain top floor (possibly a later alteration). +to the right and facing down Legge Lane, is a 3 storey entrance block, incorporating stairwell and offices. The elevation is as a distinct composition entirely faced in faience, with a monumental 1½ storey round arched portal in deeply moulded surround, 2 floral bosses and boldly modelled floral decorated stringcourse below the 2 upper storeys. The latter have close set round cornered window, as on works, with date plaques between floors and a cornice on consoles over the second floor group of windows with "Manton" inscribed in bold lettering on the frieze. The parapet has 3 large crenels, the central one bearing Henry Manton's monogram.
