Description

MOLLAND SS 82 NW 15/64 Whitley Farmhouse - II Farmhouse, now house. Early to mid-C17, remodelled probably in the late C17. Late C20 alterations. Coursed stone rubble right-hand gable end and ground floor to front, with evidence of old render, and rendered cob first floor above. Rendered rear wing, probably over coursed rubble, with eaves raised in cob, and rendered left-hand gable end over C20 blockwork. Gable-ended C20 slate (probably asbestos) roof, hipped to right. Stone rubble square stacks with weatherings. Plan and development: 1-plan, facing south-east. 2-room plan front range consisting of hall to right with external end stack and room to left divided by C18 or C19 partition with stair hall in right-hand part. Wing at rear of right-hand room consisting of narrow room, possibly former cross-passage (present kitchen) and large room to far end, with integral end stack and winder staircase in corner by stack. Lean-to outshut formerly adjoining left-hand gable end demolished in the late C20 and gable end rebuilt. Integral lateral stack added to rear of left-hand end at the same time. It is possible that the house was formerly aligned north-west/south-east (facing south-west) with a 3-room and cross-passage plan, consisting of hall with a now-demolished inner room to right and cross-passage and lower room to left. Entrance to putative cross-passage to south-west (see probable straight joints below present window and wide jambs inside continuing to ground level). The later C17 remodelling probably included the demolition of the inner room and a 1-room addition in front (south-west) of the hall. The ceiling frame in the hall appears to be late C17 and it is possible that the hall was open to the roof until the late C17 remodelling, and then floored along with the other alterations. 2-storeys. Exterior: Two first-floor windows and one ground-floor window to right; C20 2-light wooden casements. Central C19 boarded door with beaded frame. External stacks in right-hand gable end with chamfered offsets. Rear wing (south-west front): First- floor 2-light wooden casement to left and 2 ground-floor 2-light wooden casements (left-hand) one with C19 segmental brick head). Central boarded door with C19 segmental brick head. Interior: Hall to right has late C17 ceiling frame with chamfered cross beam. Open C17 fireplace to right with curved chamfered wooden lintel and bread oven. Probably C19 wooden partition between hall and staircase hall to left. C19 dog-leg staircase. C17 chamfered cross beam at head of partition. Probably former cross- passage between hall and rear room with 2 doors to hall (one blocked) and one to rear room. Window at left-end end of former passage with wide jambs, continuing to floor level (evidence of possible former doorway). Rear ground-floor room has hollow- chamfered cross beam with stepped runout stops, and wall beams; open fireplace with stone jambs, chamfered wooden lintel, cupboard in wall to left and seat in window to right. Staircase next to stack in left-hand corner rebuilt in the late C20.
