11/8 North and East Boundary Walls at Hadham Hall and - Ruins of NE Pavilion

Walls and ruins of pavilion. C17 incorporating probably C16 wall and gateway on N. Extensive remains of formal garden layout created by Arthur Capel, Lord Hadham in 1634-42. The N boundary wall runs from the Fish Pond, 180 metres to E. From the NE corner, the E boundary wall runs 140 metres to S with a step to E in the middle at the ruins of the NE Pavilion. This terraced garden was the background for the Capel family portrait by Cornelius Johnson in the National Portrait Gallery dated to 1639. A C17 painting at the Hall shows the gardens from the E. Tall red brick wall with narrow bricks in irregular English bond. Top raised in parts on N for C19 greenhouses. 2 buttressed piers at blocked gateway in line with E gable of N wing of Hall. Wall gets higher where it runs down slope to E enclosing orchard. E wall rather lower and becomes a low retaining wall S of the ruined NE Pavilion. Fine C17 red brickwork of W side of lower part of Pavilion survives. It has raised rusticated brick quoins and rusticated surround to the lower central window with rusticated, gauged brick, flat arch and raised brick keystone. Top member of cavetto-moulded rectangular oak window frame remains at top of brick blocking. Part of the group of historic structures at Hadham Hall.
