Small gentleman's house. Probably 1799-1800 for John Bailey, a plumber (ie leadwork manufacturer) and burgess of Macclesfield. Extensive alterations c1890-1900. Architect not known. Flemish-bond brickwork, tuck pointed. Hipped slate roof with central valley, of Welsh and local slate. PLAN: 2 storeys, square in plan, with main entrance to south side, hall and stair in SW quarter, services to the NW; 3 principal rooms ranged along the E, all interconnected. EXTERIOR: east front facing garden: symmetrical facade with bowed central bay. Side bays each with 16-pane sash windows to 1st floor, 20-pane sash windows to ground floor, all in reveals and under plain rubbed brick arches. Centre bay with curved 20-pane sash to first floor and tripartite sash below set in curved surround with moulded cornice and pilasters. Entrance front: 3-window range with 12-pane sashes to 1st floor, central round-headed doorway, panelled door with reveals, and fanlight with decorative glazing bars. Sash window to right, Victorian sash with leaded lights to left. N elevation: tall window lighting service stairs, with glazing bars and shaped window arch. Victorian sash window and French window. Rear: Victorian fenestration including a bow oriel window lighting principal stairs. INTERIOR contains contemporary joinery, with staircase with turned balusters and decorative tread ends.
