Detached house in own grounds, used as residential home. Late C18 or early C19. Rendered, slate roofs. A compact square main range, with central portico and lateral open-well stair; attached to the E side the service range in 2 parts, the first in 2 gabled parallel ranges, and the second a lower single range. The principal range is in 2 storeys, with 3 windows to each of 3 exposed elevations. Some original glazing-bar sashes remain, but others have been replaced by 2-light casements with a transom. The entrance front, to the S, has 12-pane sashes at each floor to the right, and a plain sash above 12-pane to the left. Centred over the portico is a casement, and to its left is an inserted escape door to an external iron stair. The Ionic portico has plain flat entablature and a small blocking-course, over a panelled door and transom light in plain reveals. To each exposed front the ground floor is channelled, with a plain mid string, and voussoirs to the windows; there is a shallow cornice, with blocking-course and coping, and end pilasters, inflected to the rustication and the cornice. The left return has one plain sash and 2 casements above a C20 square hipped glazed extension, and a deep casement. The N front, to the sea, has 2 casements and one 12-pane sash above a full-width hipped glazed extension. The main hipped roof has a central valley to a doubled E end. There are 2 ridge stacks near the W end. The service ranges are in 2 storeys, with various windows, including 12- and 16-pane sashes, and casements. On the entrance side is a lean-to porch in the angle between the doubled and single ranges. There are 5 stacks to these ranges. INTERIOR: part of main range only inspected. Much original detail has been removed in successive modifications to the house. The main staircase, to right of entry, has a generous open-well stair under an elliptical roof-light on a flat dome of Soanean design. The basement has original ceiling joists, and part of the floor is cobbled. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: at the right-hand end of the entrance front to the main block is a return wall with a segmental arch with a floating triple keystone on plain responds with square capitals, leading to the service yard. The wall links with a stable or carriage house, partly set against rising ground on its S side. This is rough rendered, with a slate roof, in 2 parts. The left half has two 12-pane sashes and a small gable stack; the right part has 2 lights at eaves level above an elliptical opening with a pair of doors and a split fanlight, three 12-pane sashes, and a further small door with elliptical head, which opens to a brick-vaulted compartment with grassed earth roof. There are 2 brick stacks. The first-floor rooms are accessible from the path to the S side, through broad plank doors. The main block has a stone floor. There is a further detached service block to the E (not included). A modest gentleman's house, on an important site facing out to sea, the building retains much of its original dignity, but has suffered some loss from nonconforming window replacement and extension.
