SHENINGTON WITH ALKERTON SHENINGTON SP 3642-3742 7/68 Cotman House GV II Rectory, now house. C16/C17 origins, partly rebuilt after fire in 1721. Garden front. Ironstone ashlar with coursed ironstone rubble to sides. Steeply pitched stone slate roof laid to diminishing courses. C20-tile roofs to rear. Stone coped gables with moulded kneelers. Renewed brick ridge stacks. Rear ranges have brick or stone end stacks, one brick stack is on a stone base. 2-unit early C18 front range with 2-unit service wing to rear plus gabled staircase projection and lower gabled part altogether roughly forming an L-plan. 2 storeys plus attic. 3-window range. Approximately central entrance has panelled/glazed door and is flanked by paired sash windows with glazing bars and wood lintels. First floor has three 3-light windows with opening casements. Three 2-light roof dormers. Sun alliance fire plaque on first floor lintel. Rear. Gabled staircase projection has 2-light windows with wood lintels, a C19 round headed window and a 2-light window high up which has lead cames and crown glass. Right end shows service wing of 2 different heights. Higher part on left. 4-panelled door and 3-light casement on ground floor. 16-pane sash window to first floor. Roof dormer. Right part has a 2-light window on ground floor and a 3-light window to first floor. Wood lintels. Interior. Early C18 range. 2 principal rooms divided by entrance hall have marble fireplaces, boxed beams and pine fittings. Kitchen has wide stone fireplace with stop-chamfered bressumer and pine cupboards with H hinges. Old service room has stop-chamfered beam, wide fireplace with stop-chamfered bressumer, bread oven and housing for copper. 2 small wood mullioned windows with wooden shutters used for ventilation. Stone spiral staircase to cellar has pine door with double hinge device. 2-light stone mullioned windows with reset ovolo mullions and one with a C13 style head. Vaulted stone ceiling and stone pitchings. 2-panelled and 4-panelled doors, pine cupboards with H and L shaped iron hinges. Early C18 front range has a 3- bay butt purlin roof.
