Almshouses. 1881. Built by GS Gibson to expand the accommodation of existing central and E blocks (qv). Grey/yellow brick. Slate roof. Rectangular plan. 2 storeys. E front elevation: 6 window range, windows have chamfered brick reveals, cast splayed sills and moulded labels and are of paired lights with wooden, hollow chamfered frames and horizontal sliding sashes each 4x4 panes. Doorways in bays 2 and 5. Doors have lower panels of chamfered boards, upper glazing, 2x2 panes. Roof concealed by parapet with moulded coping and string. 3 stacks with diagonal shafts, 4 in centre and 2 on outer pair. N and S end of block diagonally buttressed with finials. S end elevation: decorated with ground and first floor blind window and upper recess. Gable parapet with string and finials. Plaque, GS Gibson, 1881. Rear W elevation: full length C20 single storey red brick lean-to addition with 2 gabled 2-storey block equally spaced along run. Casement windows with glazing bars. Back doors have recessed lower panels and 2x3 upper glazing. (White M: Saffron Walden's History: Saffron Walden: 1991-: 94).
