BREDFIELD DALLINGHOO ROAD TM 25 SE (North side) 3/40 Bredfield Place 16/3/66 GV II House. C15 with C16, C18 and C19 and C20 additions. Timber framed and brick, rendered and whitewashed with a plain tile roof. Open hall of two bays with screens passage and two-storey parlour range, now subdivided and extended. Garden front: C20 addition at far right with open loggia to ground floor having 2 rectangular openings with a central pillar and two 3- light casements to the first floor. The left hand older portion has to left of centre a projecting gabled single-storey porch, dated 1857 to the bressumer divided by the initials T.G (overlapping and standing for Thomas Grimwood). Carved bargeboards showing acorns and oak leaves. To right and left of this and set in the simply pargetted walling are 3-light C19 casement windows and at far right is a canted bay window, also of C19 date which has central French windows. To the first floor are three 3-light casement windows, all of C19 date. To the ridge to the central axial stack of 2 flues and at right is a single-flued C20 stack, slightly below the ridge. The left hand gable end has a canted bay window to the ground and first floors of C19 date with sash windows and brackets at right and left supporting the jettied gable which has simulated framing of applied C20 planks. The rear has several outshuts of C19 and C20 date. At right of centre and on line with the screens passage is a 2-storey gabled porch wing. This has a 6-panel C20 door at right of which and above which are 2- light casement windows with cambered heads. To right of this is a lean-to outshut with two C20 single-light casement windows and to left a 2-storey lean-to which has 2-light casements at right and a doorway at left all having cambered heads. To the first floor is a 4-light dormer window with flat roof and at far left is the C20 addition which here has the large rectangular opening to the ground floor and a sash window of 4 x 4 panes to the first floor.
Interior: Chamfered ceiling beams to the ground floor that in the drawing room (originally the hall) now enclosed. Also in the drawing room and revealed by a small door is a heavily moulded chimney bressumer of c.1500 with roll, cavetto and hollow chamfered mouldings. Above this some fragments of wall painting with chevron patterns are visible. Close studding with angle braces to the rear wall of the screens passage and a C17 or early C18 wall of thin timbers with lengthy passing brace to the ground floor room beyond this and wall posts with jowled heads supporting the chamfered ceiling beam. The furthest ground floor room has a late C18/early C19 buffet cupboard arrangement with a large central arch and lateral smaller arches, that at left being a C20 reconstruction. These have fluted pilasters at either side with moulded caps and bases and projecting keystones. Shaped shelves to the arches and drawers and cupboards to the base. The first floor in the upper portion of the original hall is subdivided to form 2 bedrooms and a corridor, this latter showing close studded walling. Two trusses having cambered tie beams, originally supported on massive arch braces of which only one now survives. Central crown posts of square section and unmoulded. These project into the present attic space where they can be seen to support arched axial braces which connect with the collar purlin, collar beams and common rafters. The solar shows close studding to the external walls and a chamfered ceiling beam with ogee end stops.
