Description

REDLINGFIELD HORHAM ROAD TM 17 SE 4/158 Walcot II House, at one time the parish workhouse. 2 phases of C16 and possibly earlier work; addition of c.1700 to right forming a single long range. Timber framed and plastered. Roof over C16 section has interlocking concrete pantiles; clay pantiles to later addition. 2 storeys and attic. 5 windows, C19 2-light casements with small panes. 2 doorways with mid C20 doors, one with open porch, one with flat hood. Internal stack within earlier range. The main part is in 4 bays; bay 4 (to the right) is evidently a mid C16 addition and the stack in the adjacent bay a later insertion. Both phases have good first floor studding, with curved braces at the earlier end and reverse-curved braces in bay 4. Most of the original structure on the ground floor is concealed. Queen post roof over both phases, contemporary with bay 4. Circa 1700 end has intact studs, the main posts at the gable end with ogee-corbelled heads. The roof over this end has 2 rows of stepped diminished butt purlins.
