HANBURY CP PUMPHOUSE LANE (south side) SO 96 SE 4/109 Appleby - II

House. Early C17 with late C19 and mid-C20 alterations and additions. Timber- framed, painted brick infill and replacement walling, brick additions, plain tiled roof. Two framed bays, large sandstone chimney with three diagonal brick shafts at north gable end now enclosed within C19 single-bay addition; also C20 single-bay addition at south gable end; both additions continue original roof- line. Single storey and attic with dormers. Framing: one row of upper panels survives in east elevation. East side elevation: irregular fenestration, mainly C20 leaded casement windows; original part has a hipped-roofed, canted bay window and a 3-light window on the ground floor, a gabled dormer with 2-light window, and a gabled timber-framed porch with a half-glazed C20 door; to the right, the C19 part has a ground-floor 2-light window with cambered head and a half-glazed C20 door with a lean-to canopy on brackets; the C20 part to the left has two narrow lights with tiled weatherings and there is a brick stack at the junction of original and C20 roofs; the north gable end facing the lane has ground-and first-floor 3-light window, each has a cambered head and the ground-floor one is flanked by narrow lights; the main entrance is situated in a C20 single-storey extension adjoining to the right. Interior: roof of original part has two tiers of purlins and collar-and-tie beam trusses with two struts; central cross-frame-survives; large sandstone fireplace in north bay of original part and also staircase with re-used C17 spiral balusters. The house was once part of the Vernon Estate.
