Former country house, now 2 houses. Mid C17; major c1780 addition for John Remington. Ashlar and random rubble limestone; ashlar and concrete block chimneys; stone and asbestos slate and concrete tile roofs. Original 2-storey with attic L-plan house, with 2- storey front range to south. South front: main elevation of c1780 addition, fenestration 2:1:2, all 12-pane sashes in plain openings. Central doorway with glazed door; Ionic porch with dentil-enriched cornice. Moulded cornice with blocking course; hipped roof. East side: blank rubble wall to front range with central parapet mounted chimney having swept base and moulded cap. Two full gables to C17 house to right. Small casements to gables, mixed fenestration below, generally arranged 2 below each gable. One 12- pane sash and leaded casements to ground floor, 16-pane upper floor sashes. Two ridge-mounted chimneys. Lower addition to right with eaves-level 16-pane sash in dormer. Rear: C18 addition projects forward to left, 2 gables with linking parapet. Set back to right is parapet gable, lower part obscured by later additions. Early Cl9 addition to right with large Venetian window, 16-pane sash above. Interior: extremely fine plasterwork in principal rooms of c1780 front range, opposed doorcases having fluted friezes and 6-panel mahogany doors. Adam style fireplace in dining room faces round arched recess with medallion. Ceiling plasterwork is more elaborate and less Adam influenced than that in drawing room, both room's walls having delicate floral swags. Finest of all is the hall with 3-centred arch, behind which is open-well curving staircase with cantilever treads and stick balusters. Height of stair-hall is emphasised by tall plasterwork panels on curved wall, interrupted by doorway on axis. Plaster decoration is continued to upper floor landing, this having similar 3-centred arch above that in hall below. Stair lit by small cupola. Principal bedroom has oval arched bed recess. C17 part of house retains timber open well staircase with moulded handrail and turned balusters. Large 3-centred arched doorway to cellar. Various decorative stops to beam chamfers.
