STOKEINTEIGNHEAD STOKE ROAD (east side), SX 9070-9170 Stokeinteignhead Jasmine Cottage 17/414 GV II

House, the right hand end converted from a wheelwright's workshop and a forge. Left end of house late C16/early C17 or earlier, workshop and forge probably C18 or C19. Whitewashed rendered cob and stone; pantile roof, gabled at ends, (house formerly thatched); left end stack and rear lateral stack to house. Plan: The core of the house, to the left , apears to be the hall and inner room of an C16 or C17 single depth house (hall to the left) the passage and lower end either absorbed into the old school to the left or demolished. The basic 2 room plan single depth arrangement has been extended at the rear in the circa 1950s on the site of former farmbuildings. 2 separate blocks, set back at the right end of the house were formerly a wheelwright's workshop and forge and have been absorbed into the house accommodation, the forge being given a second storey. Exterior: 2 storeys except for the wheelwrights shop which is single storey. The house , to the left, has an asymmetrical one window front with a C20 porch to the right with a C20 timber front door. C20 3-light timber casement to left of the porch, 3-light dormer with a raking roof and C20 timber window above. The left of the front door a late C19 hatch and post office letter box date from the period when Jasmine Cottage was a Post Office. Customers did not enter the building but purchased stamps through the hatch. The wheelwright's shop, set back at the right, retains its porch. Interior: The left hand room, probably the C16 or C17 hall, has a good open fireplace with a chamfered step-stopped lintel, a chamfered half-beam and exposed joists. A partition wall between the 2 front rooms may canceal an early timber screen. The right hand room has been reduced in size by an entrance lobby, taken out of its depth, and has a C20 chimney-piece; it may have been unheated originally. A timber winder stair with a straight flight rises adjacent to the hall stack. Roof: Not inspected, but may be of interest.
